Thelma Day Obituary

Thelma Lowther Day, 84, of Hardeeville, SC, passed away on October 30, 2018 at home surrounded by her family.  She was born on April 21, 1934 to the late Owen Roosevelt “Rosie” Lowther and Pearl Phillips Lowther Pitts.  She was a dedicated wife, mother, daughter, sister, Granny, and friend.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Al Day, Jr., two daughters, Zoe Ann Fleury (Mike), and Thelma Louise “Lou” Reynolds; one son, Al Day, III; one sister, Ellen Lowther Hogsett; one brother, Tex Lowther (Barbara); nine grandchildren, Misti Cramer Pinckney (Elias), Raine Fleury Byrd (Matt), Jess Fleury VanGeison (Hunter), Rachel Fleury Stringam (Brennan), Zoe Reynolds, Taylor Day, Brooklynn Day, Albert Day, IV, and Sheriden Day; twelve great-grandchildren, Eli Pinckney (Lauren), Levi Pinckney, Presley Pearl Pinckney, Beau Pinckney, Cash Pinckney, Kai Byrd, Makaio Byrd, Kona Byrd, Harbor Fleury, Ruby Stringam, Jordan Stringam, and Vali Sullivan; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by one son, Owen Reynolds; one sister, Audrey Lowther Altman; and one brother, R.B. Lowther.

Thelma moonlighted as an Arthur Murray dance instructor while she obtained her cosmetology license from Charles & Co., and went on to own and operate her beauty shop for 30 years.  Granny was an exemplary matriarch and ruled our family with a gentle hand and a kind word.  On many occasions, she provided a place of refuge for those who had none.  She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served a mission with her husband in Colorado.  She taught us by example to love our Heavenly Father and to allow the Atonement of Jesus Christ to work in our lives every day.  Her relationship and faith in her Heavenly Father enabled her to love us all unconditionally.  We could always depend on her to fight for us.  No matter what we may have done or how we fell short, she would never leave us alone.  She was a light and comfort to us all.  We are eternally grateful she was ours.  You are our hero, and we love you to the moon and back, Granny.

For those who have known Thelma in her faithful journey, a graveside service will be held at 4 PM, on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at the Ridgeland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to Compassus Hospice at 10911 North Jacob Smart Blvd., Suite B, Ridgeland, SC 29936.
