Stoney Stone Obituary

Carl Monroe Stone, Jr. (affectionately known as “Stoney”), 85, of Ridgeland, SC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Friends of Caroline Hospice, in the company of family. Born on November 22, 1939, in Ridgeland, Stoney was the son of the late Carl Monroe Stone, Sr., and Vera Hodges Stone.

Stoney was a proud graduate of Ridgeland High School and attended the University of South Carolina. Early in his career, he worked as a bank manager at C&S Bank in Savannah, GA. Following his entrepreneurial spirit, he established several businesses that left a lasting legacy. Stoney founded The Money Tree, with locations in Ridgeland and Sumter, SC, followed by Jasper Loan Company, Low Country Finance, and, finally, Jasper Fast Cash. After a long and successful career, he retired at the age of 82, earning the respect of customers over the decades who he often thought of as friends and family.

A devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Stoney faithfully attended services each Sunday, living his life grounded in faith and love for his community. He was also an avid Carolina Gamecocks football fan, rarely missing an opportunity to cheer on his team. Known for his sharp wit, infectious laugh, and sparkling blue eyes, Stoney brightened every room he entered, especially when surrounded by his loved ones. His deep, enduring friendships—some dating back to his grade school days—were a testament to his loyalty and genuine character.

Stoney is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Stone Johnson; his brother, John Stone (Leah); brother-in-law, Tommy Niver; five grandchildren, Allison Jolley, Ashley Bashlor (James), April Williams (Brian), Hailey Patrick (Alan), and Justin Johnson;  nine great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 44 years and the love of his life, Deloris Niver Stone; his siblings, Nancy Odum White and Charles H. Stone; his stepchildren, Joey Wexel and Debbie Myrick; and his sister-in-law, Jessie Niver Boulware.

A funeral service honoring Stoney’s life will be held at 11:00am on Monday, January 13, 2025, at Vaigneur Funeral Home Chapel, 6802 Tillman Road, Ridgeland, SC.
