Mr. Royce Malphrus, 92, of Ridgeland SC, passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2020. Mr. Malphrus was born on May 14, 1928, in Great Swamp, South Carolina, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Raymond and Ida Mock Malphrus.
Mr. Royce served in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17, enlisting just before the end of World War II. He served on a destroyer, the U.S.S. Vesole on a victory tour of the Pacific. Upon his return to the U.S., he married Jean Marjenhoff (born in New York City) in 1949. They were married for over 50 years until her death in 2004.
Royce worked as a self-employed merchant, owning and managing several local businesses in the Lowcountry, S.C. For much of his career, he served as a naturalist for Sea Pines Plantation on Hilton Head Island. One of his primary duties was to catch and re-locate large alligators that were considered a threat to the population.
Royce was a gentle man, a kind soul and loved to make everyone laugh. He always had stories to tell. He especially loved to tell stories about how the children would react to his jokes during the Forest Preserve nature walks that he led. He was active in volunteer organizations in the Ridgeland area. He loved to spend time with his family and his dear friends in his beloved Lowcountry. We will remember him as someone who would do anything to make another person happy, because it genuinely brought joy to his life.
Left to cherish his memory are his 3 children, Dr. Royce Malphrus (his wife Donna Moorside), Dr. Dawn Gilbert (her husband Steve) and Dr. Ben Malphrus (his wife Jennifer Carter), 2 sisters, Vera Floyd, Virginia Byles, 3 grandchildren (Neil Hunnicutt, Sagan Malphrus and Tesla Malphrus) and 8 great-grandchildren. Royce spent his later years with his beloved companion, Ms. Betty Louise Miles.
The family will celebrate his life with a private memorial service at a later date.
