Roy Hughes Obituary

Arthur Roy Hughes, 94, of Ridgeland, SC passed away on November 4, 2024. He was born on December 5, 1929 in the Red Dam area of Hardeeville, SC to the late Mr. and Mrs. Hugh E. and Bernice Cooler Hughes.

Roy was born in the depression era and quickly learned the meaning of hard work on the family farm, from plowing the fields with a mule to doing every chore by hand. After high school he became a greyhound bus driver and during his training in Lexington, KY, he met the love of his life, Margaret. Together for more than seven decades they ran a successful business while raising a loving family.

During most of his life he raised homing pigeons. This passion led him to meet and correspond with fellow pigeon lovers around the world. Animals in general were always part of Roy’s life, from raising hunting dogs to tending several hundred head of black angus cows. His other hobbies included hunting with the family and taking new hunters on their first snipe hunt. This always led to many laughs and stories.

Roy was recognized by community and state leaders for his role in founding the Yemassee Train Depot Marine Reunion. He started this in his early seventies to honor the half a million Marines who started their military service in Yemassee Train Station. Roy’s accolades include a plague on the train station recognizing his leadership in creating the reunion and memorializing the depot. He was the 2017 recipient of the Arnold Fields Community Endowment Award. He was also in many news articles and WTOC Home Town Hero.

His family and friends will truly miss Mr. Roy – his signature white hat, shirt, and belt will never be forgotten.

Surviving family members include his son, Roy Hughes (Cheri); grandchildren, Scott McClure, Chuck McClure (Angela), Johnathan Chanes, Jasmine Bringuel (John), Jordan Hughes (Tori); great grandchildren, Aidan Bringuel, Yeva Bringuel, McKenzie McClure, Jaxon Hughes, and Adalyn Hughes, uncle, Arthur Cooler. Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings. He was also predeceased by his precious daughter, Jeanette McClure, Jeanette’s husband Ronnie McClure, and his loving wife, Margaret.

Mr. Roy will be missed by everyone who knew him. His family will always remember his love, his laughter, and his compassion for everyone.
