Richard Cox Obituary

Mr. Richard Carroll Cox, 80, of Ridgeland, passed away peacefully at Friends of Caroline Hospice Cottage on January 16, 2026. Born in Moundsville, West Virginia, on March 19, 1945, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Audrey and Bonnie Johnson Cox, he lived a life defined by service, quiet strength, and unwavering dedication. A proud veteran, Mr. Cox devoted more than two decades to the United States Navy, retiring as a Petty Officer 1st Class. His military career included distinguished service in Vietnam, where he earned the Vietnam Campaign Medal adorned with four bronze stars—each representing a campaign in which he bravely served. Following his military tenure, he continued to give back through his civil service with the Department of the Navy until his retirement. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he found joy on the golf course, often sharing stories of his three cherished hole‑in‑ones.

Family was the heart of Mr. Cox’s life, and nothing brought him greater joy than the time he spent with his loved ones. To his grandchildren and great‑grandchildren, he was affectionately known as Grandpa or “Papa Rich,” a name that reflected the warmth, humor, and steady presence they cherished. His devotion extended beyond his home and into his faith community. As a committed member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑Day Saints in Ridgeland, he worshiped faithfully alongside his late wife, Leslie, finding strength, purpose, and fellowship within the congregation that meant so much to them both.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, Richard Cox (Ann); his daughters, Rhonda Johnston (Joe) and Renee Langston; and his “bonus children,” Greg, Robert (Allison), and Lorraina (David). His legacy continues through his grandchildren—Keith, Kevin, and Corrin—and his “bonus grandchildren,” Jonathan, Austin, Landon, Coby, Valarie, Elsa, William, Harper, and Hyden. He was further blessed with great‑grandchildren—Braydon, Chase, and Melody—who brought him joy in his later years. He is also survived by his sister, Roberta Cox.

Mr. Cox’s life was one marked by service, devotion, and quiet generosity—qualities that touched everyone who knew him. His legacy lives on in the family he loved so deeply, in the faith that anchored him, and in the countless moments of kindness he offered without hesitation. Though he will be profoundly missed, the memory of his steady presence, his humor, and his unwavering love will continue to guide those who were blessed to share in his life. His family takes comfort in knowing he is reunited with his beloved Leslie, and that his journey continues in peace.

A funeral service will be held on January 30, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑Day Saints, 917 Grays Highway, Ridgeland, SC. The family will receive guests from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of the service at the church. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary Street, Beaufort, SC.

Donations in his honor may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑Day Saints in Ridgeland (address above) or to Friends of Caroline Hospice at 329 Friends Lane, Ridgeland, SC 29936.
