Reid Walker Obituary

Reid Walker was a true native of Bluffton, SC, born in 1935 on what is now Rose Hill Plantation to William and Annie Ruth Walker. He grew up during the Great Depression and shared stories of bartering with Crescent and Palmetto Bluff. Each location was known for having more game, such as venison and/or turkeys, while some areas had better soil for different vegetables. He attended school in Bluffton, SC, and played on the high school basketball team.

Reid received his certificate of completion for The National Electrical Code from Beaufort Technical Education Center in 1975. As an electrician by trade, he quickly became a Journeyman Electrician, wiring many homes, condos and clubhouses on Hilton Head Island in the 1970's and 1980s, including work in Sea Pines Plantation. In the 1990's Reid relocated to Savannah, GA, to continue his career as an electrician working for Maxwell Electric Co. He also worked for Union Camp, Fort Howard and Fluor Daniel , until retiring in 2003 and moving back to his hometown of Bluffton, SC. Reid was a Renaissance man with skills in almost every trade. He never hired anyone for repairs because men in that era learned hands on repairs as part of life; he was a jack of all trades so to speak. He always had the saying: If you are not 15 minutes early for your job, you are late. Often the first one on the job site and the last one to leave, he took his work seriously and meticulously. Reid was a no-nonsense man, if he liked you, you knew it and if he didn't well, you knew that too.

He enjoyed shrimping, fishing and boating on the May River and frequented Daufuskie Island before the development everyone sees today. At one time he had a shrimp boat and fully embraced the Lowcountry life.

His pride and joy however were his 3 daughters: Ashley Cooper (Erik), Pamela Walker-Johnson and Heather Walker. His Grandchildren: Allissa Messier, Cody Johnson (Kira), Reagen Garbett and Wesley Walker. One great-grandson, Billy Thacker.

Reid introduced his daughters to life on the river at early ages, teaching each how to fish, bait a hook, clean a fish and drive a boat. Because Reid enjoyed travel, his girls enjoyed many trips to Charleston, SC, Disney World and St. Augustine, FL.

He also taught his daughters how to bridle, saddle and ride horses while boarding horses at what used to be Roller's Farm and Derst Farm in Bluffton, SC during the 1970s and 1980s. Reid was a loving father who always put his children's needs first. His daughters fondly remember his advice: if they were thrown off their horse, "get up, dust yourself off and get back on to show the horse who is the boss." Those lessons taught each daughter life long survival skills for when life got tough: get up and keep going. They still incorporate these lessons today and have passed them on to their children (Reid's grandchildren). When it came to Reid, his daughters, and his grandchildren, Johnny Cash could not have sung it any better when he sang "I Walk the Line."

Later in life, Reid enjoyed reading and watching David Jeremiah, Fox News and Judge Judy. However, visiting with family was always his favorite way to spend the day. He had a special place in his heart for his grandchild furbaby German Shepherd, Zeva, and she for him, the immediate connection between the two was inseparable and beautiful to watch.

He also leaves behind his two siblings, brother, Tommy Walker (Joy) and sister Eunice Turner.

Preceded in Death: Grandmother: Lottie Hartley Bazzell, Father: William Walker, Mother: Annie Ruth Walker and 2 brothers Marion Walker and Jim Walker.

Reid lived life on his own terms in his 90 years; he will be greatly missed, but he left a legacy of memories for his grown daughters and grandchildren to last a lifetime!
