The community of Ridgeland has lost a dear friend and fine southern gentleman, Ralph Mathews Hall— known by everyone as Pete Hall. Pete retired to Ridgeland, with his late wife Jean McIntosh Hall, after a long and prosperous career on Hilton Head. He enjoyed being active in the low country real estate market.
Pete leaves behind four children, eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Pete had two biological sons—Arthur (Scooter) and Garrett—with his first wife Penelope Oakes Hall (who died tragically in a car accident in the early 1970s). Pete became “Dad” to Amber McIntosh Germain and Daniel McIntosh when he married Jean in the late 1980s.
Pete was born on June 17, 1938 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was adopted by Arthur Pendleton Hall and Louise Finley Hall. Pete got his nickname from a cowboy at a “dude ranch” he visited as a young boy; the cowboy thought he looked like a “Pete,” and the name stuck. Pete was a stellar athlete in high school and college.
Pete started his career in New York City as a salesman for U.S. Steel. Not a fan of the big city, he moved to Hilton Head in the mid-1960s to join his retired parents. That is when Pete joined the original team that developed Palmetto Dunes Plantation on Hilton Head. Pete later owned and operated Rollers Bottle Shop.
Pete did not want to hold a formal funeral service. He wanted his friends to know how much he will miss them. Pete’s kids hope everyone will remember him fondly as the happy and gracious “man about town.”
