Mr. Obie Orion “Dub” Mason,75, of Bluffton, SC and formerly of Alexander City, AL passed away August 21, 2024. He was born on April 3, 1949, in Alexander City.
Mr. Mason graduated from Auburn University. After college, he served honorably in the United States Navy on the USS Ranger during the Vietnam war and served twenty years in the Navy Reserve. After active duty, he attended graduate school at the Institute of Textile Technology in Charlottesville, VA where he earned a master’s degree in Textile Management. He enjoyed a long career in textile manufacturing and worked in the southern U.S. and internationally. He loved spending time with his daughter, family and friends. His favorite pastimes were fishing, traveling, watching Auburn football, dining out, and watching his granddaughter, Macy, play basketball. Some of his favorite memories were his travels with his daughter, Stacy, across the United States visiting national parks including Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, and Yosemite sharing his love for the outdoors with her and creating memories of a lifetime. His sister, Jewel Dean, also traveled with them visiting Glacier, Denali, Great Smokies, and Acadia National Parks. Mr. Mason loved oldies rock and roll music and could name the year, band, and song of just about any 60’s music. He often played his favorite Broadway musical tunes from CATS or Phantom of the Opera. His love for classic Westerns never grew old. Obie was a true and caring friend. He made lifelong friendships that he cherished. His best friend Eddie Bobb and he enjoyed many fun times fishing on the Santee and in the Smoky Mountains. Many laughs were shared when listening to the stories of their adventures together.
Obie enjoyed reminiscing on his childhood and younger days growing up in Alexander City spending time with his friends, including his dear friend Lee Jackson, and when he was a camp counselor at Camp Sequoya in NC. He shared tales of his summers spent in the Smoky Mountains learning about Native American Heritage, wilderness skills, and life. He often said the lessons he learned at Camp Sequoyah had a profound impact on him and helped guide him throughout his life. He attended the Camp Sequoyah alumni reunion last summer and shared the beauty and memories of this special place with his daughter, sister, and granddaughter.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Stacy Floyd (Dylan), granddaughter, Macy Grace Floyd, sister, Jewel Dean Mason, and Carol Booth Mason, friend and former spouse. He was predeceased by his parents, Obie William and Mable Hornsby Mason, and sister, Billie Gay Mason Wellenberger.
The family extends a special thank you to Ms. Kathleen Bobby for her caregiving and friendship to Mr. Mason during the past four years, Bloom at Belfair for being a place he could thrive, socialize, and call home, and The Weston Therapy Group for their support, care, and encouragement. Also, thank you to everyone who has cared for Mr. Mason and provided love and friendship for him and his family. He was a devoted father, husband, brother, and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
