Myrtis Gibbons Obituary

Myrtis Knola Malphrus Gibbons, 95 of Hardeeville, SC, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 21, 2020 at Coastal Carolina Hospital in Hardeeville. Born in Ridgeland on January 17, 1925, she was one of 15 children of John Walter and Golda Virginia Malphrus. Four children died as infants but she and 5 sisters and 5 brothers grew up in the Great Swamp area near Ridgeland. She and her siblings were taught to always put God and family first in their lives. Myrtis always loved and looked forward to attending the Malphrus family reunions every year. She was a faithful and longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Hardeeville. She loved the Lord, her church and her Sunday School class.

Over the course of her life, she was employed at several local businesses. She worked for several years at the old Holiday Wear garment plant in Ridgeland, several years at B & L Manufacturing, Miss Mickie's Dress Shop, Wickes Lumber Company, and at Walmart in Hardeeville. She made many life-long friends at all these locations.

Things she enjoyed doing included fishing, crabbing, sewing and most of all working in her yard growing flowers. People frequently complimented her on the appearance of her property. Any time of day you could ride by and see her working outside even into her 90's.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three former husbands; Willis H. Cooler, Calvin R. Pope, and Thaddeus Gibbons, two daughters; Gail Hubbard and Jeannie Raven, one great granddaughter, Jessica Reynolds and 12 siblings. Left behind to share memories of her are one sister, Dot Way, and one brother, Pinckney Malphrus (Mary) of Ridgeland, two daughters; Pam Padgett (Greg) of Hardeeville and Dianne Reynolds of Bluffton, a son-in-law Carroll Hubbard of Hardeeville, 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and a ton of nieces and nephews that she loved very much.

Celebration of life will be on Tuesday, Feb 25th at the First Baptist Church of Hardeeville, 13 East Main Street, Hardeeville, SC 29927. Visitation with family will be from 1 to 2 pm and the funeral service at 2pm. Interment will follow the service at Great Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, 9009 Tarboro Road, Ridgeland, SC 29936.

For the past year Myrtis has lived at the Ridgeland Nursing and Rehab Center and was under the care of Amedisys Hospice of South Carolina.
