Mildred Ruth (Cleland) Sheffield

Mildred Ruth Cleland Sheffield was born on January 7, 1926, in Ridgeland, SC. She died peacefully (non-covid related) in her home on February 9, 2021, in Ridgeland, SC. Mildred was born to Lizzie Bell Malphrus Cleland and John Marion Cleland. After John Marion died unexpectedly at 27 years old, Mildred was raised by her mother and stepfather, Hadden Roach. After graduating from Hardeeville High School, Mildred went to the Warren A. Candler Hospital School of Nursing in Savannah, GA, where she graduated in 1946. Mildred was a practicing nurse for 45 years.

Mildred married Norris Sheffield in 1947. They welcomed four children to their family, though one son died shortly after birth. She was a dedicated mother and adored her family. 

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Mildred served diligently in many different church callings. Norris and Mildred had the opportunity to serve in Latter Day Saint Temples for 19 years. 

She is survived by her children: Janet Burns (Russell), Nancy Sheffield, and Marlon Sheffield (Janet). Grandchildren: Rusty Burns (Julie), Jennifer Hayden (Brad), Christopher Burns (Melissa), Kimberly Taylor (Mike), Marlon Sheffield II, and granddaughter-in-law Kristi Burns. Great-grandchildren: Harrison, Ryan, Cassidy, Matthew, Joshua, Spencer, Cameron, Elizabeth, Margaret, Macy, Colsen, Graham, Holland, and Eden. Sister: Verna Thames, sister-in-law: Bootsie Burnsed. 

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, husband Norris, son Norris Herman Jr, grandson Michael Burns, brothers Lonnie Cleland and Ted Roach.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, on Saturday, February 13, 2021 in Ridgeland Cemetery, Ingram Street, in Ridgeland, SC.
