John D. Horry

Mr. Jondi Horry, 71, passed away Friday, April 4th, 2025 at his home in Ridgeland, SC.

Elias John Daniel Horry, better known as Jondi, was born in Ridgeland, S.C. on April 6,
1953 and died on April 4, 2025. He was the sixth child of Elias Edward Horry and
Evelyn Morrison Horry. He grew up roaming the environs of a more rural Grahamville,
S.C. than exists now with friends who would last a lifetime. He graduated from
Ridgeland High School and in a few years took over Horry’s Well Drilling from his father.
He soon became known to the residents of Jasper County as “the pump man”. Through
hard work and perseverance he established a reputation for honesty and reliability and
was able to take on several children and grandchildren in the growing business. Key to
his success was that he was a self-taught mechanical engineer who created many
machines that amazed most knowledgeable observers.

He was a devout lifelong member of Holy Trinity Church of Grahamville. He supported
his hometown and local businesses and was proud to sponsor youth sports teams.

His wife, Denise (nee Fickling) was his inseparable companion for almost 45 years. He
spent most of his adult hours working but found time to be a devoted husband, loving
father, and cherished grandfather and great grandfather. His family will remember him
playing his guitar on the porch, boating on the creek, sitting in church. But more so they
will remember his quirky humor that was the more disarming for being surrounded by
his deep wisdom.

He was the problem solver of last resort. He was loving and generous and humble. He
seemed to own things mainly so they could be given to people who were in need. He
was always there for all of us. Always there … until he was gone. Many people were
made better because they can say “Yes, I knew John. He was a good man.”

He is survived by his wife Denise; his sons Sean (Lauren), Aaron (LaTesha); daughters
Caitlin (Daniel Bryan), Jeremy (Jason Langford), Gabrielle (Martin McDonald); fourteen
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brother Hugh and
sisters Laurel Yates, Evelyn Leland, and Carlotta. Surviving siblings are Mary Elise
Gabbard, Malcolm and Joel.

A funeral service will be held at the Church of the Holy Trinity, 2718 Bees Creek Road, Ridgeland, SC, on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at 3:00 pm and continued in Grahamville Cemetery, 3234 Smiths Crossing, with reflections and the committal following the church service.

The family will receive guest at the church beginning at 1:00 pm until the hour of service.
