Inez Scoggins Obituary

lnez Scoggins went home to the Lord at the age of 99 years, on April 17 ,2023. She is the daughter of the late Stuart Sauls and Ruby Heape Sauls. Born January 1, 1924, in Ridgeland, SC, she spent her early childhood at Connie Maxwell Children’s Home. She returned to Ridgeland as a young adult and married Steve Scoggins and raised her family.

She began immediately to work as a cashier at the KB Grocery in Ridgeland. She then spent 20 years at Holiday Wear Manufacturing. She later became known for her expertise in the restaurant business. She operated a local restaurant named Major Berry's, on Highway 17. When l-95 developed she traveled to Hardeeville and managed Howard Johnson's restaurant for several years. She later returned to Ridgeland where she worked at Mr. T's restaurant and later opened her own business called Nezie's Drive-ln, located on Highway 278 in Ridgeland. Here she fed everyone in Ridgeland and Jasper County the best fried chicken, BBQ and Nezie burgers known in the Low Country. She retired from the restaurant business at the age of 74, but continued to operate and work a cleaning service well into her 90's.

She is predeceased by her husband, Steve Scoggins, 3 great grandchildren Devin Michael Roach, Adam McCoy Polk, Sidney Shea Polk, 3 brothers Edward Sauls, Wilden Sauls and Wallace Sauls, 2 sisters, Gertrude Bunton Gruber and Verna Cope. She is survived by 4 sons, Gene Scoggins (Pat), Tommy Scoggins (Diaz), George Scoggins (Debbie), Charles “Buster” Scoggins (Brenda), and one daughter Joyce Garbade (Coy). She is also survived by 10 Grandchildren, 19 Great Grandchildren, and 1 Great Great Grandchild. It is difficult to sum up 99 years in a few words. lnez had many friends. She lived an active life, worked hard and loved the Lord. She loved the simple things in life, like playing tennis, working in her yard and taking care of her family. She loved to take rides through town just to reminisce about old times, and to see how things had changed. She welcomed anyone to her home and her table was always opened. Her family and friends will all remember their own special times they shared with her. She will surely be missed by family and friends.
