Hilda Horton Obituary

Ms. Hilda Terry Horton, 78, of Ridgeland SC, passed away on November 18, 2024.  She was born in Summerville SC, on February 27, 1946, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Oregon and Carrie Long Terry.

Ms. Hilda was the unexpected joy of her parents, Oregon and Carrie, and was their only child.  She was raised in Summerville, Hampton County, and Jasper County.  At 15, she met and married the love of her life, Eugene Horton, who preceded her in death in 2008.  Together they raised two children, Sonya and Tony.  Later in life, she had the joy of becoming “Granny”, named so by her first granddaughter Lauren.  When her grandchildren began blessing her with 10 “perfect” great grands, she then became known to them as, “Gigi”.

She loved her savior and was most at home in the choir at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Ridgeland.  Besides her family and church, she loved to sew and made a career doing so alongside her boss and friend Alvernon Smith.  She loved to keep Eugene busy in the yard planting flowers.  She collected Hummingbirds and loved anything that Sparkled.  She was a Member of St. Paul’s Methodist Choir for over fifty years where she sang Alto alongside Beth Gregory, and Diaz Scoggins.  She also traveled many miles being affectionally known as “Mobile Maud” by her daughter; and was a charter member of the Jimmy Daley “Harem”. Hilda was a faithful deliverer and a founding member for the St. Paul’s Meals on Wheels program. She also was a long time member and past president of the Azalea Garden Club of Ridgeland and the Red Hat Society.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Sonya Bethea (Harvey), Tony Horton (Missy), grandchildren: Lauren Creel (Dustin), Tyler Horton (Tori), Harvey Bethea (Torii), Brandon Horton (Kendal), great grandchildren: Mallory, Sadie, Kaidan, Addie Beth, Weston, Mason, Parker, Tinsley, Leighton, Paislee, and her beloved sister-in-law, Joyce Jacobs, and a host of “favorite” nieces and nephews, and extended family. She was preceded in death by her in-laws, JR and Polly Horton, Norman and Betty Horton, Everett and Jean Horton and the Rev. James Astor “Junior” Jacobs.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday December 7, 2024, at 11:00 am at St Paul’s Methodist Church, 7488 West Main St., Ridgeland SC 29936.  The family will receive guests beginning at 10:00 am until the hour of the service at the church.  Hilda’s favorite colors were red and purple so the family would love to see you in these or other bright colors in casual wear.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul’s Methodist Church, (choir fund) PO Box 550, Ridgeland SC 29936.
