Eugenia Keiffer Carothers
Eugenia was born in Hardeeville to Charles McEllree and Mary Moody Keiffer on April 8th, 1936. She died peacefully in her sleep on January 16, 2022. Eugenia was the oldest of seven children.
Eugenia was predeceased by her parents, her brothers, Charles Keiffer, Ellree Keiffer and brother- in-law Vernon Cawthon. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Ted Carothers, her son, John Carothers (Mary), her daughter Mary Read (George) and four grandsons, Joseph, Daniel, David Carothers and Samuel Read, her brother, Jerry Keiffer (Becky), sisters Mary Ann Stewart (James), Lillian Ruth Cawthon, and Dinah Keeton (Chuck), sisters-in-law Tillie Keiffer and Katherine Keiffer.
Eugenia attended Winthrop College where she majored in Dietetics and met Ted Carothers. They were married on August 24, 1958. They relocated to the Washington DC area.
Eugenia was a woman of God and raised her family in a Christian home.
She spent her life taking care of others. She was very active in G.A.’s (Girls in Action) at Columbia Baptist Church. She also taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She volunteered at Nursing Homes, at schools, and was a preschool teacher at Columbia Baptist. She was a voracious reader.
Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and the light of her life.
She was always quick to jump in to take care of the grandchildren….. whether human or furry… She was fiercely protective of her grandsons.
We didn’t have any curtains in our homes that weren’t made by Eugenia. We have MANY memories of Eugenia in the fabric store figuring out pattern repeats and fabric requirements.
Between her sewing capabilities and Ted’s wallpaper skills, we were set whenever we bought our new homes.
She could cook anything… like her mother though, she measured in smidges and pinches– We had to measure everything to make up a recipe… it was always a “little of this and more of that”. We would have to call her for details of how to cook our favorites. She even taught Mary, her daughter, to make Grandmother’s Cement Pickles. She will be missed.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am, on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at First Baptist Church of Hardeeville, 13 East Main Street, Hardeeville, SC. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 am until the hour of the service at the church. Burial will follow the service in Purrysburg Cemetery.
