David Pratt “D.P.” Lowther, 89, of Ridgeland, SC passed away on Tuesday September 20, 2022. He was born on September 28, 1932, in Ridgeland, SC to the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur and Edith Davis Lowther.
Mr. Lowther served in the Civil Service at Parris Island, SC, and in 1958 started his own construction company and made that his life business. D.P. became concerned about the high taxes in Jasper County and decided to run for a seat on the County Council where he served as chairman from 1976 thru 1995. He was proud to say he never missed a scheduled meeting. During his tenure he was instrumental in bringing new business to the county, such as the Cypress Ridge Industrial Park, the Del Webb Company, and the I-95 interchange at exit 21. He was an avid baseball fan and for many years played softball and sponsored a local team. His love was his farm and animals, especially his famed Marsh Tacky Horses, the breed which he is credited with saving and establishing as the SC State Horse. He loved his family and enjoyed “Sunday dinner at Nandy’s” every week with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Dan Floyd Lowther; one son, David Lowther, Jr. (Theresa); four grandchildren, Ashley Lowther, Bryant Tillotson (Jennifer), Daniel Lowther (Becky), Marshall Tillotson (Alana); two sisters, Pauline Perry, Karen Malphrus; and eleven great grandchildren. He was predeceased by one daughter, Tracy Tillotson, and one great granddaughter, Ivey Belle Tillotson.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 24, 2022, at Vaigneur Funeral Home, 6802 Tillman Road, Ridgeland, SC. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 am until the hour of the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service at Floyd Cemetery in Tillman, SC.
